When in Rome

When I think about Rome my heart fills with joy.

I love Italy! Pasta, pizza, ice cream, sea food, spaghetti, bruschetta, fresh salads and many more, so that it all sounds great!

I am a gourmet. Besides loving to travel I also love food and Italy is exactly on my taste. That’s why I love to plan a trip from time to time in this beautiful country.

Roma is a city full of history. When you walk around the streets you can imagine what our ancients did, even more, you can see a lot of what they’ve achieved. Roma is like an open space museum. A virgin space, where the technology did not yet destroyed the surroundings. It is a good place to escape without being surrounded by big boring buildings.

In Rome it`s nice to go in any period of the year. In the winter it is not very cold and less crowded and in the summer it is full of tourist, pretty hot, but you find a lot of amazing places to relax and stay cool. I enjoy going in the summer time because I love the hot weather.

In this city if you are just walking on the streets you’ll find everywhere things that delight you. However, I’ll try to put in order what we saw and liked and remains forever in our hearts.

  1.   The Colosseum is  one of the seven wonders of the world. It is on the top on our must see list! It was the biggest building of its period and now it is the biggest ancient amphitheater that you can see in Italy. It was built in 80 d. H. This imposing building was used for famous gladiatorial combats, fights with animals, roman games and many public events. With a capacity of 80,000 spectators, it’s wonderful to look at it anytime. The entrance fee is 12 euros if you want to admire the inside of it.
  2. The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. It is placed between the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia. The forum was the center of the city and you can see ruins of ancient markets, administrative and religious buildings. According to mythology the Palatine Hill is the place where Romulus and Remus have been found by the wolf that raised them. This is the place where Romulus decided to build the city.
  3. Piazza Venezia is an important square dominated by “Il Vittoriano or Altare Della Patria”. A huge white marble building dedicated to the first king of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II in 1885. This building is a symbol of the Italian culture. Next to the square, there is also the famous Trajan’s column.
  4. The Pantheon is the best preserved ancient building in Rome and another must-see touristic attraction to add to this list. It was built in 126 d. H. Dedicated to all mythology divinities. It is placed in Piazza De la Rotonda. The entrance to the Pantheon is free.
  5.  Fontana di Trevi. A gorgeous fountain, one of the biggest fountains built in baroque style from Europe. This is the place where you can make a wish. The tradition says you should throw 2 coins: one to make a wish and the other one to be sure to return to Rome. You can stay all day long to admire its beauty and never get bored. This is the place where there are a lot of events. Once happened to us not to visit it because there was a fashion show.
  6. Piazza di Spagna, certainly one of the most popular squares, thanks to the beautiful perspective it offers. To reach it you have to descend 137 steps. The Spanish steps. These are considered the most romantic place in Rome. Also, here take place a lot of fashion shows, so the steps become a catwalk. On the square, you can also see the Barcaccia fountain, which adds to the charm of the place. Also you can admire there La Colonna della Immacolata. In Piazza di Spagni you can find a lot of stores that you like.
  7. Piazza Del Popolo or People’s Square It’s one of the largest squares of Rome. It’s a major point of interest, with its fountains, 3 churches and obelisk. The obelisk was brought from Egypt in 1589. An area that is always full of tourists were there are concerts and events.
  8. From Piazza Del Popolo if you are walking through Via Del Corso you’ll arrive at Piazza Venezia. Via Del Corso is perfect for the shopping lovers. There you can find a lot of nice shops, big brands where you can find the perfect gifts and souvenirs.
  9. Even though there are a lot of places to visit in Rome, you have to go to visit The Vatican. It’s the smallest country in the world, but the most visited. There you can admire Michelangelo’s art work The Sistine Chapel. Is amazing! There are ten museums. It is very easy to go there by train. The entrance fee is 15 euros for the museums. The entrance to St. Peter’s Basilica is free of charge. It`s true that it is pretty crowded, but it depends on your luck. The opening hour is 9 a.m., we were there a few minutes before 9 and there were just a few persons. But in half hour there was a big line. I heard that the best days to visit Vatican are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Sundays it is usually closed, but the best is to check the official web site for the schedule.
  10. Tivoli is an historic city 30 km away from Rome. It is lovely. It is very easy to go there, also, by train. When you arrive there you have to search Vile D’Este. There are some amazing gardens where you can walk, admire, breath fresh air and meditate.

This was our trip to Rome. Rome is amazing every time. If you go there it is impossible to be disappointed. You are caught in a trance by the history that you admire and breath. It is a romantic city, where the love passes through the stomach and the wishes really come true. What an amazing scenery! Also, if you have more time to spend in Rome you can go to the seaside. There are a lot of beaches pretty close to Rome, like one hour and half by car. It`s the ideal place.
